HAZER.
From behind the camera.
Into Western noir.
Photography came first. I’d been carrying a camera for years before Bozeman. Here, it became a way to walk up to strangers, have conversations, and hear stories.
Some of that is under the paint. In the mixed-media works, the small photographs are mine, people I photographed here. Over them go the cowgirls: black and white, one color where it counts, big enough to hold a room.
I still shoot. The paintings are after the same thing: people, and how they carry themselves.

Hats, boots, a turned shoulder, a hand at the brim. The images hold onto the gestures and strip back the noise. Don’t Ask Twice. Nobody’s Darling. Nothing To Prove.
They were never meant to be put in boxes. That goes for the presentation, too: all nine works are unframed and float mounted.
